Here's a great follow up from the other day.  1. State the “do” direction.  2. Wait for compliance (silently count to 5).  3. Ask the child to restate the direction.  4. Wait for compliance (silently count to 5).  5. Provide encouragement or help (helping will ensure compliance)  In practice: 1. ok, please throw away your garbage 2. Wait for compliance (silently count to 5).  3. What did I ask you to do?   4. Wait for compliance (silently count to 5).  5. Ok, I will help. Hold child's hand, grab garage with their hand, pull them to garbage, use their hand to open garbage and throw it away. .
